- Merchant Navy and Airline Officers' Association
Trade, professional and other related organisations
Location:
- Leytonstone, London
History:
- The Merchant Navy and Airline Officers' Association (MNAOA) was formed in 1956 by amalgamation of the Navigators and Engineer Officers' Union (est.1936) and Marine Engineers' Association (est.1887). In 1985 the Merchant Navy and Airline Officers' Association merged with the Radio and Electronic Officers' Union (est.1921) and the Mercantile Marine Service Association (est.1857) to form the National Union of Marine, Aviation and Shipping Transport Officers (NUMAST). The union originally included aviation personnel, such as flight navigators and flight engineers, however these members had been transferred to BALPA, the airline pilots' union, by 1990. In 2006 the union changed its title to Nautilus UK to modernise its name, remove reference to aviation members and reflect its working partnership with the Dutch Federation of Maritime Workers (est.1967), which changed its name at the same time to Nautilus NL. In 2009 members of Nautilus UK and Nautilus NL fully merged as a new single international union for maritime professionals, Nautilus International.
